Answer: Since they are neither one nor different, they are also destructible yet indestructible. The Awakening of Faith says: 'All characteristics of citta and consciousness are characteristics of avidyā, and are neither one with nor different from original awakening; they are neither destructible nor indestructible. Just as the seawater and its waves are neither one nor different—the waves move because of the wind, but the nature of the water does not move; when the wind ceases, the motion of the waves is extinguished, but the nature of the water is not extinguished—sentient beings are also like this. The intrinsically pure mind is moved by the wind of avidyā, stirring up waves of consciousness. These three matters are all without physical form and are neither one nor different. Yet the naturally pure mind is the basis of the moving consciousness. When avidyā is extinguished, the moving consciousness is extinguished along with it, but the nature of wisdom is not destroyed.' 'The fundamental avidyā is extinguished' corresponds to the wind ceasing. 'Continuity is extinguished' means the karmic consciousness and so forth are extinguished, corresponding to the cessation of the characteristic of motion. 'The nature of wisdom is not destroyed' means that the nature of spiritual discernment of the defiled original awakening is called the nature of wisdom, which corresponds to the nature of wetness not being destroyed.
