A verse in the Pratyutpannasamādhisūtra states: “The Buddhas attain liberation from the citta; / The citta is stainless and called pure. / The five destinies are fresh, clean, and not contaminated; / One who understands this accomplishes the Great Way.” Explanation: The five destinies stem from the citta, and the substance of the citta is ever pure; though pervading the five destinies, it is not stained by their forms. Thus, it sinks into the five destinies without falling, abides in the single characteristic without ascending, expands through the dharmadhātu without overflowing, and enters a subtle dust-mote without shrinking. This is because the one mind of tathatā is fundamentally pure in nature, without increase or decrease. Through this single dharma, all can be gathered in: just like a single drop of water at the river's source has no difference in moistening nature from the waters of the four seas; or like the space within the hole of a mustard seed is no different in capacity from the space of the ten directions. Hence it is said: “Heaven attaining the One becomes clear; earth attaining the One becomes tranquil; myriad things attaining the One are born.” Now, attaining the One, the Way is accomplished. It is also said: “The sage embraces the One as the model for the world.” This very mirror of the source serves as the model for the Chan gate.
