The Sūtra of the Tathāgata's Instruction to King Prasenajit says: 'Great King, you should know: it is like a man or woman who, in a dream, sees with a dreaming citta lovely gardens, lovely valleys, lovely kingdoms, and various kinds of beings. When that dream is awakened from, all that was seen is non-existent. Just so, Great King, the state's fortune, body, and life are false and impermanent; all are like what is seen in a dream.' Hence we know that the realm within a dream and the realm when awake are seen solely by citta, without any difference. Worldly people merely believe that dream realms are unreal, while universally clinging to daytime realms as real. Therefore, the Great Awakened One, extending compassion, spoke analogies for them to know by comparison, using the unreal that they believe to shatter the real that they believe, causing the real that they believe to become identical with the unreal that they believe, so that they suddenly awaken to the emptiness of dharmas and all enter the mirror of the source.
