In the Treatise on the Non-Duality of Mind and Object, Venerable Yunju of the Fokū lineage said: “The worldly and the supramundane alike do not go beyond arising from one’s own single thought of deluded mind. The moment a single thought arises, the boundaries of all phenomena are demarcated. As the characteristic of a single thought is born, it immediately becomes mind and object. If it were not mind and object, how could there be a thought that can be seen? Since there is both the thought that is seen and the mind that can see, one must know that the thought is the object and the seeing is the mind. The thought that is seen then becomes the aggregate of matter, and the mind that can see becomes the four [mental] aggregates. The sūtra says: ‘The five aggregates are the world.’ A single thought is equipped with the five aggregates, and within each and every aggregate the five aggregates are all fully present; therefore, one does not obstruct many, and many do not obstruct one. Hence mind and object interact, mutually serving as guest and host. The sūtra says: ‘Object and wisdom mutually interpenetrate, layer upon layer without end.’ This means that a single dust mote contains the dharmadhātu, and each and every dharma is completely omnipresent. When one contemplates the movement of one’s own single thought, the worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges vibrate simultaneously. When one contemplates one’s own single thought as constantly concentrated, then the sentient beings of the six destinies are all constantly concentrated. If one clearly penetrates the substance of a single thought, then the worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges constantly manifest in one’s own mind. From delusion regarding a single thought, object and wisdom become estranged as north and south.”
