98.9

高僧釋法空。入臺山幽居。每有清聲召曰。空禪。如是非一。自後法空。知是自心境界。以法遣之。遂乃安靜。初以禪修。終為對礙。遂學大乘離相。從所學者。並以此誨之。以法為親。以法為侶。

The eminent monk, the Śākya Fakong, entered Mount Tiantai for a secluded retreat. A clear voice repeatedly called out, saying: "Dhyāna Master Kong!" This happened more than once. Afterwards, Fakong knew this to be an object-field of his own mind, and dispelled it by means of the Dharma, whereupon it became tranquil. At first he took dhyāna practice as paramount, but ultimately it proved an obstruction; he then studied the Great Vehicle's detachment from characteristics. All who studied under him were instructed in this: taking the Dharma as kin, taking the Dharma as companion.
