the imperial younger brother, Prince Duanxian of Wei, had printing blocks carved and distributed it to famous monasteries. Yet scholars of the four quarters rarely encountered a copy of it. In the summer of the sixth year of the Yuanyou reign period, while visiting the Fayun Monastery in the Eastern Capital, I first saw the new Qiantang edition, which was especially precise and detailed. It had been brought about when Xu Sigong, a native of Wu, invited Chan Master Fayong, together with two or three elders including Fazhen of Yongle, to gather all editions extensively, and using the scriptures of the triyāna and the teachings of the sages, collated and finalized it so as to distribute it widely. Its benefit has been immensely vast. Knowing that I took delight in reading this record, Fayong accordingly requested that I write this preface.
