Dharma Master Uisang of the Eastern Country, explaining the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, says: 'One should know that although this entire single Avataṃsaka Sūtra has seven locations and nine assemblies, it exists solely within the Ten Grounds Chapter. Why is this? Because the fundamental fully gathers all teachings. Although the ten grounds are distinct, it exists solely within the first ground. Why is this? Because without leaving the one ground, it universally gathers the merits of all the grounds. Although within the one ground there are many different parts, it exists solely within a single thought-moment. Why is this? Because the three times and nine times are just a single thought-moment, and all is just one. As with a single thought-moment, so too with many thought-moments. The one is indeed all; a single thought-moment is indeed many thought-moments. In the method of dhāraṇī, host and companion complement each other: the one is the host, and all are the companions. Whichever single phenomenon is raised, it completely gathers all, down to a single word or single phrase completely gathering all. Why is this? Because without this, that cannot be established. Such is the nature of the dhāraṇī method. The sūtra says: "The Tathāgata, within a single spoken utterance, proclaims an ocean of boundless sūtras."'
