Answer: It is simply that sentient beings are deluded about their own principle and give rise to various false thoughts. At this time, tathatā merely manifests defiled marks. Because original enlightenment internally perfumes the false mind, there is revulsion and seeking. Because there is revulsion and seeking, the true function immediately manifests. Because revulsion and seeking are weak, the marks and functions are coarse. As revulsion and seeking gradually increase, the function also becomes subtle. Gradually like this, up to the source of the mind, when avidyā is exhausted, revulsion and seeking entirely cease; initial enlightenment becomes identical to original [enlightenment], and function returns to substance—equal, non-dual, and without distinction. Before reaching the source of the mind, function is manifested within consciousness according to one's faculties; hence it is said to manifest within consciousness.
