Answer: For those who turn their backs on themselves to conform to dust-objects and form understandings merely by conforming to the letter, out of fear that they will be constrained by the teachings and stagnate in emotion, this statement was made. If one understands the purport by following what is expressed, and clarifies the citta through the teachings, then what grasping and rejecting could there be? Therefore Dharma Master Zang said: 'There are sentient beings who find the truth by seeking the teachings, harmonizing principle and teaching without obstruction. Constantly contemplating principle does not obstruct upholding the teachings; perpetually reciting and practicing does not obstruct contemplating emptiness. Then principle and teaching are both interfused, uniting into a single contemplation; only then is it the ultimate transmission and comprehension.' This is the oneness of teaching and contemplation, where expression and purport share the same source.
