The three contemplations are the wondrous gate that penetrates to principle. Now in clarifying this meaning, we borrow these as metaphors. Looking up to the distant traces of the Buddha's Dharma, its spiritual efficacy is vast and expansive. Seeking this is not far off; it is entrusted to the one mind. Grasping its origin, it synthesizes the three wisdoms. If one employs provisional skillful means to bring about distinctions, they converge back to the one path, tranquil and doubly illuminating. The names of the three contemplations come from the Yingluo jing. The sūtra says: "Entering emptiness from the provisional is called the contemplation of the two truths. Entering the provisional from emptiness is called the contemplation of equality. Doubly illuminating the two truths, mind after mind is tranquil and ceased, naturally flowing into the ocean of sarvajñā."
