Answer: From beginning to end, this consciousness does not have a single kṣaṇa of interruption; it perceives both internal and external [objects]. The Yogācārabhūmiśāstra says: 'The ālayavijñāna has no interruption at any time. The characteristics of the vessel world [it perceives] are like when a lamp flame is produced: internally it holds the oil and the wick, and externally it emits light. In just this way, the ālayavijñāna takes the internal appropriation as object and takes the external vessel [world] characteristics as object; the principle of its arising should be known to be just like this.' Furthermore, its perception of objects never lapses, and its time undergoes no change; from the first kṣaṇa of appropriation up to the end of life, it evolves with a single taste of discernment.
