Now, the original intention of the Mirror of the Source is merely to discuss its Way. Setting forth texts and meanings is for broadly sheltering all capacities; sharing this pointer, there is ultimately no other purport. One must not rely on the letter and lose its central aim. If one awakens to its Way, one can carry on the succession and transmit the robe. For example, someone asked Venerable Nanquan: "Under Huangmei there were five hundred people. Why did only Postulant Lu obtain the robe and bowl?" The master said: "Only because four hundred and ninety-nine people all understood the Buddha Dharma; only Postulant Lu alone did not understand the Buddha Dharma, but merely understood its Way. Therefore, he obtained the robe and bowl."
