The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa asks: "Having inhaling and exhaling breaths is a characteristic of the self. Glancing, blinking, life-span, citta, suffering, pleasure, love, hate, exertion, and so forth, are characteristics of the self. If there is no self, who has these inhalations and exhalations, glancing, blinking, life-span, citta, suffering, pleasure, love, hate, exertion, and so forth? You should know that there is a self inside initiating movement; therefore life-span and citta are also dharmas of the self. If there were no self, it would be like an ox without a driver. Because there is a self, it can control the citta to enter the Dharma and not indulge in heedlessness. If there were no self, who would control the citta? The experiencer of suffering and pleasure is the self; if there were no self, it would be like trees, which cannot distinguish suffering and pleasure. Love and hate, exertion and the like are also like this. Although the self is subtle and cannot be known by the five senses, because of these characteristics, it can be known to exist."
