The verse answers: / Directly seeing is like within a dream; / The seeing and what is seen are not simultaneous. / When seeing, there is no conceptual discrimination; / How can one say there is direct seeing? / For all ordinary persons, things seen in the dream of defilements are all like things in a dream. Like directly seeing form without knowing the meaning of form; it is only through subsequent discrimination by the manovijñāna that one afterwards cognizes it. When the manovijñāna discriminates, the eye-consciousness and other [sense-consciousnesses] do not exist, because they have already ceased, for all phenomena do not abide for a single instant. This is because when seeing form, that manovijñāna does not exist; when the manovijñāna arises, that eye-consciousness does not exist.
