Answer: There are four kinds: first, anuśaya; second, enveloping avidyā; third, associated [avidyā]; fourth, unshared [avidyā]. Ordinary beings outside the Dharma possess all four; ordinary beings within the Dharma exclude unshared avidyā. Entering the seventh mind of the stage of faith, as well as the stage of preparatory application, is [to be] within the Dharma; prior to the seventh mind of the ten faiths, because there is retrogression, and within the stage of provisions, one is called 'outside the Dharma'. If an ordinary being within the Dharma awakens suddenly, karma is immediately created; if awakening gradually, it is not created. Among those praised for awakening, when compassion predominates, it is created; when wisdom predominates, it is not created. From the eighth bhūmi onwards among the ten bhūmis, karma is definitely not initiated, because the substance of delusion is absent. Prior to the seventh bhūmi, some say of the noble ones that, because pure brightness serves as the condition, karma is not initiated; even if there are innate [kleśas], they merely assist vows to moisten rebirth, and nothing more. Others say: prior to the seventh bhūmi, when the innate arises, wholesome karma of particular recompense is also created.
