The Mahāyānasaṃgraha poses this question: "If there is no separate dust-object of rūpa and it is merely the fundamental vijñāna, why does it manifest resembling rūpa and so forth? Why does it abide continuously and solidly, similar before and after? If it were produced by the transformation of vijñāna, it should arise suddenly and perish suddenly, changing and unstable. Why does a single rūpa remain continuously for a long time? Therefore, we know there must be a separate rūpa."
