The Sūtra of Forty-Two Chapters says: "The śramaṇa who has left household life cuts off desire and rids himself of craving, recognizes the original source of his own citta, reaches the fundamental principle of the Buddha, and awakens to unconditioned phenomena. Internally having nothing to attain, externally having nothing to seek, the citta is not tethered to the Path, nor does it bind up karma. Free from thought and free from action, it is neither cultivation nor realization; without passing through the various stages, it naturally becomes most supreme: this is named the Path." Furthermore, the Buddha said: "Looking upon heaven and earth, reflect upon impermanence; looking upon the world, reflect upon impermanence; looking upon the spiritual awareness, it is precisely bodhi. Having such a citta and vijñāna, one attains the Path swiftly."
