The Zazang jing says: 'When one does good, blessings follow; when one treads in evil, disaster pursues. Like an echo responding to a sound, good and evil are like tones. They are not conferred by devas, nāgas, ghosts, or spirits, nor are they wrought by ancestors. Mind is that which creates them; body and speech are that which accomplish them.' The Buddha spoke in verse, saying:

'Mind is the basis of dharmas; / mind is supreme, mind is the master. / If within one thinks evil, / speaking it or doing it, / sin and suffering will follow of themselves, / like the wheel crushing upon the track. / Mind is the basis of dharmas; / mind is supreme, mind is the master. / If within one thinks good, / speaking it or doing it, / blessings and joy will follow of themselves, / like a shadow following a form.'
