The Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra says: "How does a bodhisattva cultivate the foundation of mindfulness on citta? One contemplates this citta-nature: one does not see a citta in the internal āyatanas; one does not see a citta in the external āyatanas; one does not see a citta in both the internal and external āyatanas; one does not see a citta within the skandhas; one does not see a citta within the dhātus. Having not seen it, one reflects thus: 'Is such a citta different or not different from its conditions? If citta is different from its conditions, then at one time there would be two cittas. If citta is identical with its conditions, it should not be able to contemplate its own citta, just as a fingertip cannot touch itself; citta is also like this.' Having made this contemplation, one sees that citta has no abiding, is impermanent and changing, and the place of its condition ceases." It also says: "Not seeing a single phenomenon, not seeing the appearance of a single phenomenon, not seeing the radiance of a single phenomenon—if one sees thus, it is called the right view of the Buddha-Dharma."
