The Chengju guangming dingyi jing states: "What is called expanding the one mind? It is said: filial service to parents makes one's mind one. Respecting teachers and friends makes one's mind one. Cutting off attachment and distancing oneself from worldliness makes one's mind one. Entering the thirty-seven factors [of enlightenment] makes one's mind one. Being in empty leisure and quiet loneliness makes one's mind one. Being among the multitude in confusion and distraction makes one's mind one. Where there is much desire, much contention, much activity, and much distress, making one's mind one in such places. Regarding praise and blame, gain and loss, good and bad affairs, remaining unshakeable in these and making one's mind one. Counting breaths and entering dhyāna, abandoning the six [sense objects] to approach purity, and making one's mind one. Personally being able to practice this, and moreover teaching others—this is called expanding the one mind."
