The Śūraṅgamasamādhisūtra says: 'At that time the Buddha told the deva prince Xianyi: You may manifest a small portion of the fundamental power of the Śūraṅgamasamādhi. The deva prince Xianyi spoke to Jianyi, saying: Humane One, do you wish to see a small portion of the power of the Śūraṅgamasamādhi? He answered: Deva prince, I joyfully wish to see it. Because the deva prince Xianyi had skillfully obtained the power of the Śūraṅgamasamādhi, he immediately manifested transformations, causing all those in the assembly to become wheel-turning sage kings, adorned with the thirty-two marks, along with retinues and attendants of the seven treasures. Furthermore, he displayed supernatural power, universally causing the entire assembly to be like the body of Śākyamuni Buddha, with his major and minor marks and dignified deportment, each surrounded by a retinue of bhikṣus.' Explanation: The deva prince is named Xianyi (Manifesting Thought) because all phenomena are produced from thought, and physical form appears on account of citta; hence he is named Xianyi. From this we know that one's own citta is like an illusion, without fixed form; the differences in what is seen arise and cease in accordance with citta. If one can know that illusions have no reality, one then sees the true nature. Because one has attained the true nature, one is then able to pervade the dharmadhātu, display the dharma-gate of being like an illusion, universally manifest physical bodies, and guide illusory sentient beings so that they return together to the realm of reality.
