The Sūtra on the Buddha's Ascension to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven to Preach the Dharma for His Mother says: 'The Buddha told the devaputra Candana: "What is meant by the bodhisattva understanding all things to be like empty space? The three realms are what citta makes. If one does not calculate this citta, it has no form or image, nor can it be seen; it has no location and no command; it is like an illusion or transformation. If, based on the root of this citta, one seeks all dharmas, they cannot be found. If, through citta, one does not seek within citta, then nothing is obtained. Citta cannot be grasped. Because citta cannot be found, all dharmas likewise cannot be found. Dharmas have no dharmas; they have no notions of shape or kind, nor do they have shadows; they are non-existent, and together with the real truth, nothing is to be seen. As for having nothing to be seen: toward all dharmas, the citta enters nowhere; knowing all dharmas to have nothing accomplished and nothing arisen, they are just like empty space."'
