The Udānavarga says: 'One whose body is clad in the armor of precepts, yet whose mind lacks the sword of wisdom, cannot destroy the chief of the defilements.' Hence we know that if one does not contemplate citta so that wondrous wisdom is accomplished, one cannot sever the root of avidyā. Therefore, the Śūraṅgamasūtra says: 'Observance and transgression merely bind the body; / what is not the body has nothing to bind. / Since it is originally not pervasive of all, / how could one attain complete penetration?'
