The verse of the ninth patriarch, the venerable Buddhamitra, asking the venerable Buddhanandi, says:
“Father and mother are not my closest kin;
Who is the closest kin?
The Buddhas are not my Path;
What is the supreme Path?”
The verse in reply says:
“Your words are close to citta;
Father and mother cannot compare.
Your conduct accords with the Path;
The Buddhas' citta is precisely this.
Seeking externally for a Buddha with marks
Bears no resemblance to you.
If you wish to know your original citta,
It is neither joined nor difficult.”
Because of this he awakened to the Path. The Dharma-entrustment verse says:
“The true principle is originally without name;
Because of names the true principle is revealed.
Having received the real Dharma,
It is neither true nor false.”
