The fifth patriarch, Great Master Hongren, said: "If you wish to know the essentials of the Dharma, the mind is the root of the twelve divisions of scripture. There is only the ekayāna Dharma. The single conveyance is the one mind. Merely guarding the one mind is the gate of mind-tathatā. All practices of dharmas do not depart from one's own mind; only the mind knows itself. The mind has no physical form or color. The patriarchs only transmitted mind with mind; the realized ones seal and certify it, and there is no other dharma." He also said: "Everything depends on the mind; heterodoxy and orthodoxy lie in oneself. Not thinking of a single thing is the original mind. Only wisdom can know it; there is no other practice." His verse of transmission of the Dharma says: / "Sentient beings come to sow the seeds; / Dependent on the ground, the fruit grows again. / What is insentient has no seed, / And has no nature and no arising."
