Great Ven. Si of Nanyue said: "If we speak of practitioners, they must first penetrate the citta. If the citta attains penetration, all dharmas are simultaneously and completely penetrated. Hearing purity spoken of, not producing thoughts of purity—this is fundamentally self-pure. Hearing emptiness spoken of, not grasping emptiness. It is like a bird flying in the sky: if it were to abide in the sky, it would surely suffer the calamity of falling. Non-abiding is the fundamentally innate quiescence of the substance; 'and yet producing that mind' is the radiant function. That very quiescence is the concentration of the self-nature; that very radiance is the wisdom of the self-nature. Concentration itself is the substance of wisdom; wisdom itself is the function of concentration. Apart from concentration there is no distinct wisdom; apart from wisdom there is no distinct concentration. At the very moment of concentration, it is precisely wisdom; at the very moment of wisdom, it is precisely concentration. At the very moment of concentration, there is no concentration; at the very moment of wisdom, there is no wisdom. Why is this? Because the nature is naturally thus. It is like a lamp and its light: although they have two names, their substance is not different. The lamp is the light; the light is the lamp. Apart from the lamp there is no distinct light; apart from the light there is no distinct lamp. The lamp is the substance of the light; the light is the function of the lamp. This is the dual cultivation of concentration and wisdom, not departing from one another."
