Chan Master Fazhao said: "A sūtra says: 'Hundreds of thousands of names through three asaṃkhyeya [kalpas] are all different names for the Tathāgata'—that is, alternative designations for the true citta. Another sūtra says: 'The ten thousand dharmas do not go beyond the one mind.' This is the meaning. Bondage binds from the citta, and liberation liberates from the citta. Bondage and liberation come from the citta and have nothing to do with other matters. The technique for the essentials of escape lies only in contemplating the citta. Furthermore, if one raises the gate of the one mind, everything is only the one mind. If a single dharma were not citta, then it would exist outside the citta. Who could establish a separate track outside the citta?"
