The monk Huangbo said: Bodhidharma came from the West only to transmit the dharma of the one mind, directly pointing out that the minds of all sentient beings are originally Buddha, not relying on cultivation. Only now recognize your own mind and see your original nature; do not seek another dharma. How to recognize one's own mind? That which is speaking right now is your mind. If it does not speak and does not function, the substance of the mind is similar to empty space: it truly has no shape or characteristics, nor any location. Nor is it entirely non-existent; it is simply existent yet unseen. He also said: Merely awaken to the one mind, and there is not the slightest dharma to be attained; this is the true Buddha. The Buddha and sentient beings are of one mind, with no difference at all. It is better to acknowledge the fundamental dharma for oneself beneath the words. This dharma is the mind; outside the mind there is no dharma. This mind is the dharma; outside the dharma there is no mind.
