Venerable Deshan said: “If there is a single dust mote or a single dharma that can be attained, [and] given to you to grasp and give rise to understanding, you have fallen into the realm of the heavenly māras and non-Buddhists. It is merely a numinous emptiness, where not even a fine mote of dust can be found. Everywhere is pure; [its] radiance penetrates and reaches throughout, luminous and transparent inside and out.” He also said: “Do not cling in love to the holy. ‘Holy’ is an empty name; there is no other separate dharma. It is merely a blazing numinous emptiness, unobstructed and self-sovereign. It is not attained through adornments, cultivation, or realization. From the buddhas to the patriarchs, all transmitted this dharma and thereby achieved transcendence.”
