The late Venerable Dongshan’s Secret of the Citta Elixir says:
“I have a medicine called the citta elixir,
Refined for months and years in the furnace of kleśas.
I know it does not alter its embryonic color;
Its luminous brilliance shines throughout the great chiliocosm.
Opening the Dharma eye, gazing at the tip of a hair,
It can transform the ordinary and the holy in a single instant.
If you wish to know the genuine and false achieving function,
Watch it tempered in the forge through all periods of time.
It has no shape, neither square nor round;
In words there is no thing, in things there are words.
To use it with intentional citta is to violate its true function;
With no deliberate intent to settle in dhyāna, there is nothing that is not dhyāna.
Neither extinguished nor arisen,
The dense array of myriad phenomena are all deployed by it.
No matter the province or land, just bring it along;
Cast into this furnace, there is nothing that is not right.
Not a single intent is my intent,
Not a single wisdom is my wisdom;
Not a single flavor fails to differ.
Its color does not change, ever harder to discern;
Not a single further thing appears within it.
Do not take a single thing to subdue it;
Its substance merges with true emptiness, not forged through tempering.”
