The Buddhabhūmiśāstra states: "Although space is visibly seen to be associated with various forms, it lacks the various characteristics of those forms. Because it is associated with smoke, mist, and the like, at times space is seen to have various characteristics. Through the power of false discrimination, one merely sees that smoke and the like have various characteristics; it is not that one sees space, because the nature of space cannot be seen. Up to: the mind-purified dharmadhātu is free from name and speech, because all names and words take what is arisen from discrimination as their object. However, the teachings of the Dharma are also not in vain, because they are the indirect causes for realizing the dharmadhātu. Just as seeing written characters leads to understanding the meaning spoken of, because these teachings of the Dharma flow forth from the great compassion of the tathāgatas, they can indirectly express the meaning that is free from words. Just as painting space with various colors is extremely rare, expressing the meaning that is free from words by means of words surpasses even that."
