The Tiantai Commentary on the Amitāyus Sūtra says: 'Regarding speaking in terms of a single word, the commentary says: "What is practiced is as what is spoken. What is spoken is indeed the teaching. 'As' is indeed the principle. Practice is indeed practice. The Buddha is indeed the dharmakāya. Contemplation is indeed prajñā. Amitāyus is indeed liberation." One should know that penetrating the one is penetrating the three, and penetrating the three is penetrating the one. Within the one, one understands the immeasurable; within the immeasurable, one understands the one. Penetrating immeasurable meanings in a single word—how much more so in many words! How much more so in a single title! How much more so in a single sūtra! How much more so in all sūtras! Thus the sūtra says: "If one hears the name of the opening title, the merit obtained is beyond measure." If one does not understand in the manner described above, how could one obtain limitless merit?' The commentary explains: 'If one does not return to the one mind for understanding, how could one obtain limitless merit? Because immeasurable merit is fully possessed within the one mind. If separated from the mind, everything seen is incomplete, and entirely becomes perverse and inverted. Even if one possesses the gateways of practice, they all become restricted and partial.'
