「牛頭融大師問：『諸法畢竟空，有菩薩行六度萬行否？』答：『此是三乘二見心。若觀心本空，即是實慧，即是見真法身；法身不住此空，謂有運用覺知，即是方便慧。方便慧亦不可得，即是實慧；恒不相離，前念後念，皆由二慧發。故云：「智度菩薩母，方便以為父，一切眾導師，無不由是生。」』

"Great Master Niutou Rong asked: 'All dharmas are ultimately empty; does a bodhisattva practice the six pāramitās and the myriad practices, or not?' The answer was: 'This is the dualistic mind of the triyāna. If one contemplates that the mind is fundamentally empty, that is real wisdom, that is seeing the true dharmakāya; when the dharmakāya does not abide in this emptiness, meaning that it has functioning, awareness, and knowing, that is expedient wisdom. When expedient wisdom also cannot be attained, that is real wisdom; they are never separated from each other, and former and subsequent thoughts are both generated from these two wisdoms. Therefore it is said: "Wisdom pāramitā is the bodhisattva's mother, / And upāya is the father; / All the guides of the multitude / Are without exception born from them."'"
