"Or hanging banners in stūpas and temples, and erecting precious canopies over holy images: though directed with an intention aimed toward other conditions, the merit obtained solely brings about one's own fruit. Thus when the Buddha was in the world, there was Patāka, who in the past had made a long banner and hung it on the stūpa of Vipaśyin Buddha; since then, for ninety-one kalpas, among gods and humans, there was always a great banner shading over him, and he enjoyed fortune and joy, later leaving the household and attaining the Path. Moreover, a sūtra says: 'If a person hangs a banner, for every turn the wind blows it, he receives the position of a cakravartin; even down to when it decays into dust, for every speck of dust he receives the position of a petty king.' The Sūtra of the Hundred Avadānas says: 'There was an elder named Precious Canopy, who in the past held a maṇi jewel to canopy the top of Vipaśyin Buddha's relic stūpa; since then, for ninety-one kalpas, among gods and humans, there was always a natural precious canopy covering above his head; eventually he encountered the Buddha, left the household, and attained the fruit of Buddhahood.'"
