"As for reciting, chanting, and singing hymns, sublime Brahma-melodies are raised in song. Formerly, when Bhadrika chanted hymns, the clear reverberation reached the Śuddhāvāsa heaven; when Śākyamuni entered absorption, the harp song resounded in the stone chamber. Gardens, forests, towers, and pavilions are Dharma gates for entering the dharmadhātu; sounds, voices, words, and speech are buddha-activities that accomplish the Buddhist principle. The Vinayamātṛkā says: 'The Buddha told the monks, "I permit you to chant hymns."' Hymns are words of vocal speech. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya says: 'It causes the devas, hearing the hymn, to rejoice in their hearts.' Or using musical dancers, conches, cymbals, pipes, and flutes, generating a joyful mind to make various offerings. The Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra says: 'If one has people play music, / Beating drums, blowing horns and chanting hymns, / Flutes, panpipes, harps, konghous, / Pīpās, cymbals, and bronze gongs— / Such multitude of sublime sounds, / All offered up in worship; / Or with a joyful mind, / Singing hymns in praise of the Buddha's virtue, / Even with a single small sound, / All have already accomplished the Buddha path.'
