Or feeling shame and harboring remorse, one constantly gives rise to a sense of rejoicing; recognizing one's lot and knowing gratitude, one ever generates the thought of repayment. The Saṃyuktāgama says: 'At that time, the World-Honoured One told the monks: "There are two pure dharmas that can protect the world. What are the two? Namely, shame (hrī) and remorse (apatrapā). If the world lacked these two pure dharmas, the world would not know of parents, brothers, sisters, wives, children, kin, teachers, elders, superiors, and inferiors; it would be inverted and chaotic, like the realm of beasts." Then he spoke a verse: / "If the world did not have / The two dharmas of shame and remorse, / It would transgress the pure path / And head toward birth, old age, sickness, and death. / If the world accomplishes / The two dharmas of shame and remorse, / It increases the pure path / And eternally closes the gate of birth and death."'
