Or praising the virtues of others, one opens the gate to promoting the good; or celebrating their fame, one initiates the path of recommending the worthy. Fulfilling others' excellence, one helps arouse courage; rejoicing in others' glory, one joins in bringing about good deeds. One chips away the scorpion stings of jealousy; one quells the poisonous wind of resentment. Raising the minds of the four immeasurables, one gathers beings as oneself; accomplishing the practices of the four pleasant dwellings, one brings benefit to sentient beings. For this reason, the great bodhisattvas all reflect upon past lives: surging like waves in the sea of suffering, committing all manner of unprofitable deeds, expending merit and losing strength, only nourishing the sprouts of karma. Now examining former wrongs, they immediately practice the Buddha path; donning the armor of vigor, they generate the vajra mind; practicing all goods universally, they broadly initiate the benefits of the Dharma. Entering worldly samādhis, they manifest skillful supernormal powers; blending their light with the dust, they act secretly and function hiddenly. Extinguishing the fire of ignorance, they topple the banner of arrogance; bending to accommodate capacities, with a gentle countenance they entice and instruct. Gathering beings with kind words, they look upon them with compassionate eyes; opening understanding for the foolish and blind, they comfort the terrified. Hanging the sun that illuminates the world, shining the lamp that shatters darkness, they lift the heavy bolts of the prison of existence, and moisten the blazing flames of the burning house. Fulfilling the wishes of seekers like a wish-fulfilling jewel, uprooting the roots of the sick like the medicine of good sight. They dry up the ocean of desire to form an ocean of compassion; they shatter the wheel of suffering to form the wheel of wisdom; they transform the ferry of poverty into a ford of meritorious virtue, and redirect the wilderness of birth and death to merge into the path of bodhi. Within the Buddhadharmas, there is nothing they do not perform; within the realm of sentient beings, there is nothing they do not rescue. Like the earth supporting, like a bridge ascending, like the wind sustaining, like water moistening, like fire ripening, like spring giving birth, like space containing, like clouds covering. Thus they cause those who hear their names to escape suffering, those who tread their shadows to attain peace; those touched by their light have the defilements of their bodies lightened and cleansed, and those mindful of them have the monkey-mind subdued. All this proceeds from the subtle to the prominent, gradually accumulating wholesome roots; when practice is full and merit complete, they accomplish this great task. Why then destroy the path of wholesome karma, open the gate to the wretched destinies, bring about māra-conditions, and extinguish the Buddha-seed?
