The gate of practicing the Way has nothing extraordinary about it; it only requires cleansing the seeds of karmic consciousness accumulated beneath the sense faculties and sense objects for immeasurable kalpas. If you can simply extinguish emotional thoughts and cut off delusive conditions, having a mind like wood and stone toward all worldly realms of desire and affection, even if the eye of the Way is not yet clarified, you will naturally achieve a pure body. If you encounter a true guide, you must diligently draw close to them with wholehearted devotion. Even if your inquiry is not yet thorough and your study not yet accomplished, once it has passed through your ear faculties, it will remain an eternal seed of the Way, so that age after age you will not fall into the durgati, and birth after birth you will not lose a human body; as soon as you emerge, hearing [one thing] you will awaken to a thousand. You must believe that a true kalyāṇamitra is the greatest condition among human beings, capable of transforming sentient beings so that they behold the buddhadhātu. Deeply lamentable are those in the degenerate age who falsely teach a 'one-sided Chan', learning only empty pretenses with entirely no actual understanding. With every step they act in existence, yet with every word they preach emptiness. Not blaming their own entanglement in the power of karma, they further instruct people to dismiss cause and effect. They then claim that drinking wine and eating meat do not hinder bodhi, and that committing theft and lust do not obstruct prajñā. In life they suffer under the king's law, and at death they plunge into Avīci. Once the karma of the hells is exhausted, they enter again among animals and hungry ghosts, without a time of release for hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas—unless in a single thought they turn the light around, immediately reversing the crooked into the upright. If you do not repent for yourself, regret for yourself, and cultivate for yourself, even if all the Buddhas appear, there will be no way to save you. If cutting out your own heart and liver feels like wood and stone, then you may eat meat; if drinking wine tastes like feces and urine, then you may drink wine; if beholding handsome men and beautiful women seems like looking at corpses, then you may engage in lust; if viewing your own wealth is like dung and dirt, then you may steal. Even if you have refined yourself to such a stage, you still must not follow your own inclinations; you must wait until you realize the immeasurable holy body before you can act according to or against the conventions of the world. In the ancient sages' provisions, could there have been any other intention? It was solely because monks and nuns in the age of the decline of the Dharma rarely uphold the prohibitive precepts, and fearing that they might deceive laypeople who tend toward the good and cause many to regress from their aspiration for the Way, they broadly enacted protective prohibitions. As spoken in a thousand sūtras and set forth in ten thousand treatises: if you do not eliminate lust, you sever all seeds of purity; if you do not eliminate wine, you sever all seeds of wisdom; if you do not eliminate theft, you sever all seeds of merit; if you do not eliminate meat, you sever all seeds of compassion. The Buddhas of the three periods expound this with one voice; the Chan lineage throughout the world proclaims this with one sound. How is it that later students do not listen or comply in the least, destroying their own correct causes and conversely practicing demonic teachings? It is solely because of karmic seeds perfumed in past lives and meeting false teachers in this birth, so that good power is easily consumed while roots of evil are hard to uproot. Have you not seen what an ancient sage said: 'Seeing a single demonic deed is like ten thousand arrows piercing the heart; hearing a single demonic voice is like a thousand awls stabbing the ears'? You must quickly stay far away from them, neither seeing nor hearing them. Each of you examine your own mind; be cautious and do not take this lightly. You have stood for a long time—take care.
