"Generally speaking, there are four kinds of good dharmas: First, intrinsic goodness, which is the three wholesome roots—non-greed, non-anger, and non-delusion. Second, associated goodness: when a wholesome mind arises, the primary mind and mental factors arise together at the same time. Third, motivated goodness, which initiates bodily and verbal karma to manifest the thoughts of the inner mind. Fourth, the goodness of ultimate truth, whose substance and nature are pure. Furthermore, there are two kinds: First, goodness of principle, which is the ultimate truth. Second, goodness of phenomena, which is the six perfections and myriad practices. Nowadays people mostly rely on the goodness of principle; but if it is only the goodness of principle, even icchantikas possess it, so why do they not become Buddhas? Therefore one must practice the goodness of phenomena to adorn and reveal principle; only by accumulating great merit and virtue does one accomplish the wondrous body. It is like ore containing gold, or a mountain harboring jade; like a stone retaining fire, or the earth bringing forth a spring. If they do not encounter causes and conditions, they will not be brought to practical use; although fundamentally possessed, having them is the same as not having them. The three causes of sentient beings are also like this: whoever has a mind fully possesses the direct cause; but without attaining the conditioning and revealing causes, the dharmakāya cannot be accomplished. The revealing cause is adorned with wisdom, correct understanding, and contemplation; the conditioning cause is adorned with merit and virtue, with wondrous practices to foster and develop it. When the three causes are complete, the Ten Epithets shine brilliantly; benefiting oneself and benefiting others reaches its ultimate point here. Thus the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra states: 'Adorning my body with marks, my light illuminates the world; revered by all the multitudes, I preach the seal of the dharmatā.'"
