Answer: "Principle is the fundamental of the Way; practice is the trace of the Way. Through the fundamental, traces are manifested; without the fundamental, where could traces be applied? Through traces, the fundamental is revealed; without traces, how could the fundamental stand alone? Therefore it is said: 'Although the fundamental and the traces differ, their inconceivable oneness is the same.' Hence we know that only by first clarifying the primary tenet can one advance on the Way; if one solely chases after branches, it truly causes obstruction. A sūtra says: 'It is not that without comprehending tathatā one can accomplish its practice; it is like an illusion or the like, which seems to exist but is not real.' Moreover, people of complete faculties and sudden reception have both negation and illumination without stagnation. Being illumination directly within negation, double negation is immediately double practice; being negation directly within illumination, double practice is immediately double elimination. Without destroying the fundamental, it is constantly the branches, with the myriad practices proliferating; without destroying the branches, it is constantly the fundamental, with the one mind ever tranquil."
