1.14

大覺璉和尚曰。玉不琢不成器。人不學不知道。今之所以知古。後之所以知先。善者可以為法。惡者可以為戒。歷觀前輩立身揚名於當世者。鮮不學問而成之矣（九峯集）。

Master Dajue Lian said: “Jade uncarved does not become a vessel; a person unlearned does not understand the Way. It is by means of the present that one knows the past, and by means of what is after that one knows what came before. The good can serve as a model; the bad can serve as a warning. Looking through the predecessors who established themselves and made their names renowned in their times, rarely was it not achieved through learning and inquiry.” (*Collection of Jiufeng*)
