白雲初住九江承天。次遷圓通。年齒甚少。時晦堂在寶峯。謂月公晦曰。新圓通洞徹見元。不忝楊岐之嗣。惜乎。發用太早非叢林福。公晦因問其故。晦堂曰。功名美器造物惜之。不與人全。人固欲之天必奪之。逮白雲終于舒之海會。方五十六歲。識者謂。晦堂知機知微真哲人矣（湛堂記聞）。

Baiyun first resided at Chengtian in Jiujiang, and next moved to Yuantong, when his years were still very few. At that time, Huitang was at Baofeng, and he said to Yue Gonghui, ‘The new [abbot of] Yuantong has penetratingly seen the primal origin, not shaming the lineage of Yangqi. What a pity, though, that his deployment of function is too early; it is not a blessing for the monastic groves.’ Gonghui then asked him the reason. Huitang said, ‘Merit, fame, and fine vessels are begrudged by the Creator, who will not grant them entirely to anyone. If humans obstinately desire them, Heaven will certainly snatch them away.’ When Baiyun passed away at Haihui in Shu, he was just fifty-six years old. Those who knew said that Huitang understood the subtle signs and the incipient; he was truly a wise person.” (Things Heard and Recorded by Zhandang)
