明教曰。聖賢之學。固非一日之具。日不足繼之以夜。積之歲月。自然可成。故曰。學以聚之。問以辨之。斯言學非辨問無由發明。今學者所至罕有發一言問辨於人者。不知將何以裨助性地。成日新之益乎（九峯集）。

Mingjiao said: “The learning of the sages and worthies is certainly not something achieved in a single day. When the day is not enough, they continue it through the night, and accumulating it over months and years, it naturally can be accomplished. Thus it is said: ‘Through learning one gathers it; through questioning one discerns it.’ This means that unless one discerns and questions, there is no way for learning to be realized. Nowadays, wherever students go, rarely does anyone utter a single word to question and discern with others. I do not know how they will thereby benefit the ground of nature and bring about the profit of renewing themselves day by day.” (*Collection of Jiufeng*)
