2.13

靈源謂長靈卓和尚曰。道之行固自有時。昔慈明放意於荊楚間。含恥忍垢見者忽之。慈明笑而已。有問其故。對曰。連城與瓦礫相觸。予固知不勝矣。逮見神鼎後譽播叢林。終起臨濟之道。嗟乎道與時也苟可強乎（筆帖）。

Lingyuan said to the Venerable Changling Zhuo: 'The practice of the Way certainly has its proper time. In the past, Ciming gave free rein to his will in the Jing and Chu regions; bearing shame and enduring insults, those who saw him treated him with contempt. Ciming merely laughed. When someone asked the reason, he replied, "When a priceless jewel clashes with broken tiles, I certainly know it will not prevail." It was only after meeting Shending that his reputation spread throughout the monastic groves, and in the end he revived the Linji lineage. Alas! Can the Way and the opportune time ever be forced?' (*Bitie*).
