2.17

靈源謂古和尚曰。禍福相倚吉凶同域。惟人自召安可不思。或專己之喜怒。而隘於含容。或私心靡費而從人之所欲。皆非住持之急。茲實恣肆之悠漸。禍害之基源也（筆帖）。

Lingyuan said to the Venerable Gu: 'Misfortune and fortune lean upon one another; auspiciousness and inauspiciousness dwell in the same realm. Since they are summoned only by oneself, how could one not reflect on this? Whether acting solely on one's own pleasures and anger while being narrow in tolerance, or squandering with private intent while yielding to people's desires—none of these are the urgent tasks of an abbot. These are in truth the subtle beginnings of indulgence and the root source of calamity.' (*Bitie*).
