湛堂曰。有道德者樂於眾。無道德者樂於身。樂於眾者長。樂於身者亡。今稱住持者。多以好惡臨眾。故眾人拂之。求其好而知其惡。惡而知其好者鮮矣。故曰。與眾同憂樂。同好惡者義也。義之所在天下孰不歸焉（二事癩可贅疣集）。

Zhantang said: 'Those who have the Way and virtue rejoice in the community; those who lack the Way and virtue rejoice in themselves. Those who rejoice in the community endure; those who rejoice in themselves perish. Nowadays, many who are called abbots confront the community with their personal likes and dislikes, and so the community opposes them. Rare indeed are those who, liking someone, still know their faults, and disliking someone, still know their merits. Therefore it is said: To share sorrows and joys with the community, and to share their likes and dislikes—this is righteousness. Wherever righteousness resides, who under Heaven will not turn to it?' (Two matters from the *Leike zhuiyou ji*).
