2.50

佛眼曰。人生天地間。稟陰陽之氣而成形。自非應真乘悲願力出現世間。其利欲之心似不可卒去。惟聖人知不可去人之利欲。故先以道德正其心。然後以仁義禮智教化隄防之。日就月將。使其利欲不勝其仁義禮智。而全其道德矣（與耿龍學書）。

Foyan said: "Human life is between heaven and earth; it is endowed with the qi of yin and yang to form a physical body. Unless one is an arhat appearing in the world through the power of compassionate vows, the mind of profit and desire seems impossible to cast away abruptly. Only sages know that profit and desire cannot be eradicated from people; therefore, they first rectify people's minds with the Way and virtue, and then educate, transform, and establish embankments against them with benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom. Day by day and month by month, they ensure that their profit and desire do not overcome their benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom, thereby preserving the Way and virtue intact."
