2.59

高菴住雲居。每見衲子室中不契其機者。即把其袂正色責之曰。父母養汝身師友成汝志。無饑寒之迫無征役之勞。於此不堅確精進成辦道業。他日何面目見父母師友乎。衲子聞其語有泣涕而不已者。其號令整嚴如此（旦菴逸事）。

When Gao'an resided at Yunju, whenever he saw a patch-robed monk in the room whose capacity did not accord with his, he would grasp his sleeve, sternly rebuke him, and say: "Your father and mother nourished your body; your teachers and friends fulfilled your aspirations. You have no distress of hunger and cold, and no toil of corvée or military service. If here you are not resolute and diligent in completing the cultivation of the Way, on a future day with what face will you meet your father, mother, teachers, and friends?" Upon hearing his words, some patch-robed monks wept without stopping. His discipline and strictness were like this. (Dan'an Yishi)
