湛堂曰。祖庭秋晚。林下人不為囂浮者。固自難得。昔真如住智海。嘗言。在湘西道吾時。眾雖不多猶有老衲數輩履踐此道。自大溈來此不下九百僧。無七五人會我說話。予以是知。得人。不在眾多也（實錄）。

Zhantang said: 'It is the late autumn of the patriarchal grove. People of the forests who are not clamorous and superficial are truly hard to find. In the past, when Zhenru resided at Zhihai, he once said: "When I was at Daowu west of the Xiang River, though the community was not large, there were still several veteran monks who put this Way into practice. Since coming here from Daguishan, there have been no fewer than nine hundred monks, yet not even five or seven understand my speech." From this I know that obtaining the right people does not depend on large numbers.' (*Shilu*).
