Venerable Juefan wrote an inscription for the gate tablet of Lingyuan, saying: 'At first Lingyuan had no desire to appear in the world; his resolve was very firm. When Zhang Wujin served as commissioner to Jiangxi, he repeatedly summoned him, but could not move him. After a long time, he suddenly changed his mind and said, "The Chan monastic groves are in decline, while many proclaim the Dharma. If I steal a moment of ease and do not urgently support them, their collapse can be expected in a single step." Thereupon he opened his Dharma [hall] at Taiping on the Huai River. At that time I was traveling east and visited his gate. The orderliness of the monastic grove and the great revival of the style of the lineage made me suspect it was not inferior to the days when Baizhang was unharmed. Fifteen years later, I saw this tablet in Fengyuan's room; reading it, it was so awe-inspiring as if I saw his bones of the Way. Shan'gu wrote large characters in a grid for it, inspired by its spirit. Alas, if those in the world who bestow the gift of the Dharma all complied with Lingyuan's words when serving as abbot, what worry would there be that the ancestral Way would not be revived? The tradition says, "Humans can broaden the Way; it is not the Way that broadens humans." Lingyuan exemplified this' (from *Shimen ji*).
